Emigrating from Holland in the early 1960s, the Ham family established themselves as nurserymen before going on to create Alpha Domus in 1990. They produced their first vintage in 1996. The estate has always been well known for its fantastic Bordeaux style reds. Last year saw the introduction of new labels incorporating the family interest in all things aviation. The Navigator is a blend of Merlot 42%, Cabernet Sauvignon 30%, Cabernet Franc 20% and Malbec 8%. The wine was matured in a mixture of French and American barriques (40% new, 70% French) for 20 months. A complex aroma of ripe berryfruits, plums, violet, liquorice and hints of leather. Influences of sweet vanilla and toast result from oak barrel maturation. Plum and blackberry are supported by clove and spicy notes in the mouth. Game and leathery characters add complexity. The ripe fruit, sweet oak and firm tannins create a robust, complex wine with excellent length. Enjoy with red meats, pasta, strongly flavoured dishes or cheese.
