Besson Givry 1er Cru Les Grands Prétans 2004
Xavier Besson took over the family seven hectare domaine in 1989. He immediately began to modernise the wine making and to restructure the vineyard. He was joined by his wife, Guillemette, in 1996. They now export 50% of their production – mainly to North America and Japan. They use 35% new oak for their 1er cru, which is harvested manually. Their 17th century cave is a classified historic monument and is quite spectacular. Grown on the finer sites within the Côte Chalonnais, Besson's 'Grands Pretans' is a fairly sturdy, masculine wine. It has deep colour with big structure. A true Burgudian Pinot Noir. Shows complexity with notes of game, leather and dried fruit appearing before the wonderfully long finish.
