Casas del Bosque Pequenas Producciones Syrah 2011
A blend of two different clones of Syrah (95% clone 300 and 5% “Caperana” field selection) from 8 year old vines planted on hillsides. Planted on vertical shoot positioned trellising with an average density of 3.333 vines per hectare. The vines are leaf plucked on the eastern (morning sun) side of the canopy in late December and then again on the western (afternoon sun) side in mid March. Harvest was carried out by hand in late May. Subjected to a whole cluster followed by an individual berry selection and then gravity fed to small open-top tanks . Drained and pressed using a traditional basket press and then put to a mixture of new (60%) and 2nd use (40%) French oak barrels for 14 months during which time it was racked twice: once in the Spring (upon the completion of malolactic fermentation) and then once again in Autumn shortly before bottling. Deep purple in colour. On the nose lifted notes of blackcurrant, violet and lavender dominate with just a hint of tar. In the mouth flavours of dark chocolate, truffle and liquorice combine with a vibrant acidity and svelte tannins leading to a long, juicy finish. A great partner to Bouef Bourgignon or similar slow cooked dishes.
